The ABC, Australia’s national broadcaster, is one of the first Western media organisations to establish a website inside China’s firewall. The AustraliaPlus.cn news portal was launched last Thursday in Shanghai and aims to connect Chinese and Australian audiences and extend cultural understanding.
ABC Managing director, Mark Scott said the site is devoted to information and lifestyle stories about Australia. The target audience is those who may want to study, do business, send their children or make an investment in Australia.
Australia’s Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, in a video on the AustraliaPlus.cn website, acknowledges that China is Australia’s largest source of migrants, overseas students and international tourists.
